In fall 2010, the Jewelry Project will become a venue for Baltimore based jewelers to share their knowledge about jewelry design and production, as well as entrepreneurial strategies for independent artists.
Project organizers will create a jewelry studio space in a new arts center in East Baltimore. This new studio will blend the creative aspects of a design firm with the supportive elements of a community center. We will work together to create innovate new products, and each member of the cooperative will teach jewelry workshops in a community setting of their interest, such as the House Of Ruth.
The coop will have several events and exhibitions per year to showcase their work and the work of the communities with whom they work.
HISTORY
The Jewelry Project began as a weekly workshop in the House Of Ruth Maryland's emergency shelter for domestic violence victims and their children. The workshops are an outlet in this transitional moment, providing a calm and supportive space for women in transition.
When women choose to donate jewelry to the project, they receive a jewelry supply kit as payment. All of the proceeds from the jewelry donated in the shelter workshops goes back in the art program in the shelter, funding the creation and installation of public artworks about domestic violence.
House Of Ruth Maryland
The House Of Ruth Maryland leads the fight to end domestic violence by confronting the attitudes, behaviors and systems that perpetuate it, and by providing victims with the services necessary to rebuild their lives safely and free of fear.
